Research Fellow in the Ethical and Social Implications of the Clinical Use of Genomic Risk in Cancer Care
Grade 7: £32,817 – £40,322 p.a.
This exciting position, which is based at the Ethox Centre in Oxford’s Big Data Institute, offers the opportunity to join an internationally recognised ethics and social science research team engaging with practical ethical and social challenges raised by genomic data and its use in healthcare. The primary focus of this position will be contributing towards the development of the ethics and social science programme of a Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Catalyst Award – Cangene-Canvar; Data Resources, Clinical and Educational Tools to leverage Cancer Susceptibility Genetics for Early Detection and Prevention of Cancer which is designed to deliver research and resources that will improve how we deliver national NHS testing for cancer susceptibility genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2. It will involve working with a large team of scientists, clinicians and patients highly passionate about achieving this goal.
As Research Fellow, you will take primary responsibility for coordinating, developing and carrying out empirical research and administrative activities for the Cangene-Canvar ethics workpackage. You will collect and analyse qualitative data from a variety of sources, contribute ideas for new research projects within Cangene-Canvar, present papers at conferences or public meetings and carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions and research groups within the Cangene-Canvar programme.
To be considered you will hold a PhD/DPhil in a relevant subject, together with previous relevant experience, and have a strong record of scholarship in qualitative research and/or bioethics. You will also have prior research in the project topic area (ethics of data-sharing, public engagement, social science/ ethics of genomics) and excellent communication skills, including the demonstrated ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings.
