Students attending a lecture

The Ethox Centre is responsible for teaching medical ethics and law to all medical students in the Oxford Medical School, both on the standard course and the Graduate Entry course. The textbook for these courses is Medical Ethics and Law: A Curriculum for the 21st Century (3rd Edition), Dominic Wilkinson; Jonathan Herring; Julian Savulescu; R. A. Hope. (2020) London: Elsevier. The Centre also runs a Special Study Thread for medical students in the fourth year of their course.

Additional Opportunities for Oxford Medical School Students

Special Study Theme (Year 4)

In the fourth year of their studies, students in the Oxford Medical School have the chance to deepen their learning in a chosen area of the course. Students who select Bioethics as their Special Study Theme (SST) will spend a week here, at the Ethox Centre, attending additional lectures with a variety of speakers. The students will then undertake a project on their chosen area of Bioethics.

Special Study Module (Year 6)

Oxford Medical Students in their final year can select to complete a Special Study Module
(SSM) in Bioethics over a three-week period here, at Ethox. During their visit, students will
have the opportunity to network with the department and fully engage with all seminars and
events, whilst working on their project.
