ANDREW MARKUS VISITING SCHOLAR IN MEDICAL ETHICS AT OXFORD

About   

The position of Visiting Scholar is to be awarded to a practising medical doctor (physician) with an interest in medical ethics. It provides an opportunity for a clinician to take part in the academic and College life of the University of Oxford. The University is one of the major centres for both medical research and philosophy in Europe.    

The successful applicant will undertake research in medical ethics at the University of Oxford. Visiting Scholars will spend four weeks working at the Ethox Centre and Green Templeton College. The scholar will benefit from the supervision and feedback of Ethox research staff and will have access to the libraries and research facilities of the College and the University of Oxford. He or she will also have the opportunity to attend talks and lectures at the College and across the University.    

During the visit, the scholar will be expected to give a seminar (in English) on a topic in medical ethics. This seminar will be open to interested members of Green Templeton College and the wider University. The scholar will also give a presentation on his or her research at an Ethox Centre research seminar.    

The Scholar will be offered four weeks' free accommodation at Green Templeton College, and a stipend of £1000 which is intended to assist with travel and other costs relating to the visit.

about Andrew markus

Dr Andrew Charles Markus (1930-2012)    

This award is named in memory of Andrew Markus. Dr Markus was an outstanding primary care doctor with a profound interest in medical ethics. He gave a great deal of his time, skill and enthusiasm to supporting the Ethox Centre particularly during its early years when such support was crucial. We remember him with great fondness and admiration.

Caroline Miles Visiting Scholarship

About

The Caroline Miles Visiting Scholarship is funded by the Ethox Foundation and is awarded annually to a post-doctoral or early career researcher to visit the Ethox Centre. The value of the scholarship is up to £2000, and is intended to assist scholars with travel and living costs during their visit. Visiting Scholars will spend up to a month working at the Ethox Centre in Oxford, pursuing a research project on a topic relating to one of the Ethox Centre’s four main research programmes: global health ethics; clinical ethics; public health ethics; and research ethics. They will benefit from the supervision and feedback of the Ethox research staff and will have access to the libraries and research facilities of the University of Oxford. They will also have the opportunity to attend talks and lectures which are relevant to their interests. Scholars will be expected to make a presentation on their research toward the end of their stay.

WHO WAS CAROLINE MILES?

Caroline Miles (1929-2006) played a key role in the founding and development of the Ethox Centre. Her vision and also her generous financial support have made possible the creation of the Caroline Miles Scholarships.
