Suphak Nosten is a senior advisor, community engagement senior staff and frontline researcher at the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU), leading a team of health workers in targeted malaria elimination programmes in Mae Sot, Tak Province, Thailand, at the Thai-Myanmar border.

Through her photography and her conversations with Karen migrants she reveals the daily lives, struggles, hopes and connections with clinical-research staff at the network of clinics in this border region.

Her father and uncles harvested the corn, carried the bags, climbed up a single pole ladder filling up the barn. Her task was to kick down the corn to make space at the entrance. It was like sliding down the hill using both legs and hands. It looked really fun and it was fun. Gallery 2
work and livelihoods

The signs of Animism can be seen in most Karen villages in rural areas. It is a reminder to communicate with respect, not to offend others, and not to get into trouble for oneself. Most villagers who practice Animism live close to nature and no nails are used for the building of their houses. Gallery 3

Carrying her feverish child, a mother makes her way to the malaria post in the village. She walks through mud puddles and flooded fields, despite the leeches. Gallery 4
difficult journeys to care

Only if you have experienced what it’s like having malaria, will you understand that this little girl in the refugee camp does not want to move at all. All she asks is to lay her head on her mother’s arm. Her mother stays with her and comforts her. Gallery 5
