September - October 2024
Dr Hope Kent is a Caroline Miles Visiting Scholar at the Ethox Centre. She is a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Exeter, in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
Her research aims to understand why people from minoritised groups (particularly those with neurodisabilities) are over-represented in the criminal justice system. She uses large administrative datasets to explore these patterns at a population level. At Ethox, she is exploring the ethical implications of using predictive risk modelling in the criminal justice system. Currently, these tools are used at all stages of the criminal justice system to inform decision-making about deprivation of liberty, but there is a real risk that they embed bias against marginalised groups into this decision making.
