Dr. Maxwell Smith is a Caroline Miles Visiting Scholar at the Ethox Centre. He is an Assistant Professor and Western Research Chair in Public Health Ethics in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada, where he also serves as an Associate Director of the Rotman Institute of Philosophy and is cross-appointed in the Department of Philosophy, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health.

Dr. Smith's research is in public health ethics, with a focus on infectious disease ethics and the demands that health equity and social justice place on governments and other institutions to protect and promote the public's health. He has served in many advisory roles in this area, including with the World Health Organization COVID-19 Ethics and Governance Expert Working Group, Public Health Agency of Canada Public Health Ethics Consultative Group, Ontario COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force, and Ontario Public Health Emergencies Science Advisory Committee.
