Dr Safura Abdool Karim is a Visiting Academic at the Ethox Centre.
Safura is the Berman Institute-Oxford Joint Postdoctoral Fellow in Global Infectious Disease Ethics at Johns Hopkins University. She is also an adjunct Assistant Professor at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University. Safura is a public health lawyer and researcher whose work focuses on the use of law to improve health outcomes. She completed her PhD in Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Her current research focuses on developing a collective right to health using concepts of solidarity and communitarianism and issues of equitable access to health technologies including vaccines. In addition, Safura works on obesity prevention policy and the commercial determinants of health – including conducting empirical research to develop and evaluate the implementation of policy interventions to improve diet and developing human rights-based approaches to improving diet in Africa.
