A conversation on greening clinical trials with key actors in the field.
Abstract
The event will explore with the speakers/audience the environmental impacts of clinical trials and the ecosystem of actors, tools and communities of practice working on greening clinical trials. We will bring key actors in the field in conversation with the research community with the goal of sharing helpful resources, discussing challenges and raising some broader questions.

Speakers
Chair: Federica Lucivero
Federica Lucivero is an Associate Professor in Ethics of Technology at the Ethox Centre, Oxford Population Health. Federica’s research explores ethical questions related to the environmental sustainability of scientific research using digital infrastructures and large datasets. She co-leads the Wellcome funded SHARE research project, co-directs the Shade Research Hub at the intersection of sustainability, health, AI and digital technologies and chairs the Sustainable Health Data Conversations.
Speakers and Panellists confirmed so far:
- Carly Santer started her career in academic medical research driven by an interest in how human health and healthcare systems have evolved in response to our environment, along with the impact that healthcare has on the environment. She transitioned from academic laboratory research to clinical research / clinical trials within large, corporate organisations to increase her positive impact on human health and well-being. Carly is a Strategic Advisor on climate and health for the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition and a Visiting Fellow at Hult International Business School, based in the Sustainability Lab focusing on Impact Research exploring organisational action on climate and health.
- Nathalie Preiswerk is a scientist turned communications specialist passionate about rethinking drug development and healthcare paradigms to maximise access equity and environmental sustainability. She works with the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition, has founded a consultancy called Net Positive Health, and collaborates with NGOs, trade associations, patient organisations, expert groups and startups, in Switzerland, Europe and beyond.
- Mike Hill is the Laboratory Scientific Director of the Wolfson Laboratory at Oxford Population Health, a central facility supporting large-scale international clinical trials and observational studies. His research team focuses on developing reliable, cost-effective, and scalable laboratory methods that not only enable high-quality population health research but also support environmentally sustainable practices through efficient resource use, streamlined workflows, and reduced laboratory waste.
