Collaborations
The Ethox Centre is privileged to collaborate with other Bioethics teaching departments across the globe. We provide the opportunity for students from Oxford, Amsterdam and New York to take part in an educational exchange.
Oxford - Amsterdam Winter School
The Ethox Centre, the Department of Medical Humanities of the VU University Medical Centre (Vumc) and the Department of Philosophy of VU University in Amsterdam have established a Winter School for VUmc/VU’s students on the MA Philosophy, Bioethics and Health course, Ethox’s DPhil students and students from Augsburg University.
The week-long Winter School involves students giving presentations on papers published by staff members of Ethox and colleagues from the Oxford Ethics and Humanities (OEH), and engaging in discussions about contemporary bioethical issues. The Winter School is organised by Suzanne Metselaar (VUmc) and Gerben Meynen (VU) and Ruth Horn and Mehrunisha Suleman at Ethox.
Future plans are focused on expanding the Winter School into a larger student exchange programme and building stronger research collaborations.
Oxford - Mt Sinai bioethics student exchange programme
The Oxford - Mt Sinai bioethics student exchange programme is part of a long-standing collaboration between Ethox and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (the Oxford - Mt Sinai Consortium on Bioethics). The exchange programme offers an opportunity for medical students from ISMMS with an interest in bioethics research to come to Ethox to spend 3 or 4 weeks working on their own project in the context of a bioethics research group.
The students develop their own bioethics research project under supervision from one or more Ethox researchers. They also benefit from discussing their work with other members of the Ethox research team, as well as taking part in seminars, joining the Ethox DPhil group and connecting with Oxford medical students. As well as supporting medical students to develop careers that incorporate bioethics scholarship, the visit also benefits staff and students at Ethox who have shared interests and can learn from the ISMMS students about ethical issues in the US clinical context.
