How long is too long?: Waiting, age, and temporal justice in organ allocation.
Wednesday, 03 June 2026 to Thursday, 04 June 2026
Workshop exploring the ethics of how waiting time and patient age should influence liver transplant allocation decisions in UK and US healthcare systems.
EVENT DESCRIPTION
This event is an applied philosophy workshop addressing a pressing ethical challenge in healthcare resource allocation. How, if at all, should the time patients spend waiting for a scarce medical resource matter morally? And how does the ethical significance of waiting time vary depending on a patient’s age? These questions are examined through the case study of liver transplantation, with a focus on how the UK and US systems account for age and waiting time differently in allocation policymaking. This event is sponsored by the Society for Applied Philosophy.
