Global Health Ethics

The Ethox Centre has a major research interest in the ethical issues arising in healthcare and in biomedical research understood in a global context. The Centre has a particularly strong research interest in the ethics of collaborative global health research and in understanding the complex ethical issues arising out of the interplay between globalised research collaborations and the ways in which such research is manifested locally in low-income countries. Against this backdrop, the Centre's global health bioethics research programme aims to investigate four related questions:

• How can biomedical researchers develop effective solutions to practical ethical problems in the context of conflicting, ambiguous and sometimes contradictory guidance and regulation?
• What are the responsibilities of researchers and research institutions to the communities in which their research is carried out?
• What are the ethical obligations of researchers in collaborations bringing together research institutions and other organisations e.g. hospitals, government agencies and so on with different and sometimes competing interests, concerns and priorities?
• How should researchers address practical ethical issues arising in the development of effective and appropriate community engagement in diverse research settings?
