Research Question
What effect do AI and big data systems have on human agency and moral responsibility in healthcare? How can patients, practitioners, and the general public best respond to potential obscurities in responsibility? This project investigates the social and ethical challenges arising with newfound medical technologies, specifically the ways in which emerging systems may be threatening moral responsibility in the delivery of healthcare.

Tereza hendl
Research Question
mHealth technologies from a public health perspective - The incorporation of mobile health (mHealth) technologies into 'health consumers’ daily lives is increasingly being promoted as an avenue to strengthening patient autonomy and improving public health outcomes. However, an emphasis on self-management implicit in and reinforced by mHealth technologies raises ethical concerns. The placing of responsibility for health outcomes on the individual warrants critical examination as it fails to account for broader socio-political factors that shape individual and population health.

Research Question
Healthcare facilities in receiving countries regularly encounter temporary migrant workers whose need for acute or subacute care trigger the prospect of termination of employment and repatriation. In many of these cases, the workers are unlikely to receive adequate treatment if sent back home due to financial and other barriers. In receiving countries where such repatriation depends on the sanction or at least the assessment of medical professionals, how should medical professionals assess such cases and ensure that medical repatriation is conducted in an ethical way?
Position at time of visiting Ethox
Assistant Professor, National University of Singapore
Danielle M. Wenner
Research Question
Justice in the setting of health research priority setting – while much research ethics seeks to identify norms appropriate to the design and conduct of individual clinical trials, the ethics of health research priority-setting is more accurately construed as a question about the norms appropriate for governing the research enterprise as a whole, as health research priority-setting is an exercise with social impacts that stretch well beyond the stakeholders of any given study, and which can only be optimized when considered comprehensively. How ought research priority setting be informed by considerations of justice?

What reasons are there to relax the existing AMR control measures? What is the acceptable threshold-level of risk of spreading AMR? How can we justify a particular threshold of acceptable risk given the threat that AMR poses to public health?
